The 29-year-old man, Cristines Bacelan, and 24-year-old woman, Elisabeta Cimpina, who are boyfriend and girlfriend, arrived in Canada on October 12th.
They went on their three-day crime spree two weeks later before they were arrested aboard a Marine Atlantic ferry in Port aux Basques as it was about to depart.
RCMP obtained a search warrant for their vehicle, which was removed from the vessel, and recovered the merchandise.
In total, they stole about $18,000 worthy of fancy fragrances from Shoppers stores in St. John’s, Paradise, C.B.S., Gander and Corner Brook.
They’ve been in custody since their arrest, making appearances in Gander court by phone and virtual means him from HMP in St. John’s and her from the women’s correctional centre in Clarenville.
During sentencing, court was told the pair pleaded guilty right away, showed remorse and had no criminal records.
They must also serve a year of probation and pay back anything left owing to Shoppers Drug Mart.
