More horror stories of our troubled skies abound in the midst of the crunch at Pearson International with people trying to get to Newfoundland following an interruption in WestJet’s schedule.
Sam Synyard of Marystown says he got lucky, thinking to check with the counter on a whim. He had yet to receive a call from the company about the situation and says the airline did not make any attempt to contact anyone in the NL group.
Synyard told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that he wasn’t scheduled to fly out until late on the 22nd but through sheer luck he got in last night on a direct WestJet flight from Toronto to St. John’s.
What he saw on the plane was astounding, especially given that some of those stranded in Toronto won’t be getting out until Boxing Day. Synyard counted 64 empty seats, and counted a second time to make sure: 56 in economy and eight in first class.
Meanwhile, the official opposition is calling on the Premier to step in and help find a solution for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians stranded in Toronto.
Leader David Brazil calls it a “heartbreaking, unacceptable situation.”
He says the Premier Andrew Furey needs to get on the phone with the executives at WestJet to make sure it’s a happy Christmas for those stuck with uncertainty.
