The Premier is firing back against the opposition parties who argue that government has been reactive, instead of proactive in their response to inflation.
Premier Andrew Furey says he takes some issue with the premise of that argument.
“How can I be proactive to the sources of inflation?” asks Furey.
He says the opposition parties must think that his office has a lot of power if they think he can control the war in Ukraine, supply chain issues, and the pandemic.
Furey argues that there has to be an element of reaction, saying that it is responsible leadership to be reactive in that space.
He says they can also be proactive, which Furey believes they have achieved.
He highlights what he calls a “program approach” at the beginning, which included cutting motor vehicle registration and the gas tax in half, and providing more supplements for seniors including the $500 cheques.
He says they will continue to look at potential measures heading into the new year. However, he says the opposition wanted them to do all of that on day one, which Furey believes shows “how incredibly myopic they are, and political they try to be” in a situation that requires foresight and responsiveness.
