A prominent citizen of Carbonear has passed away.
Calvin “Cal” Powell, who came from a long line of business leaders in the town, died surrounded by his family on December 27. He was 72.
Carbonear Mayor Frank Butt says Powell, who at one time ran one of the largest wholesalers in the province, contributed greatly to the community.
Butt and Powell lived alongside each other for three decades. One of Butt’s favourite memories was enjoying a smoked turkey Powell cooked and shared with his neighbours. Powell’s son and namesake, Calvin Powell Junior, is a classically-trained baritone singer and performer well known for his performances across the province including Handel’s Messiah at the Basilica in St. John’s.
No funeral service will be held at Powell’s request.
