It was meant to be a memorable occasion but a trip home for one Alberta couple turned out to be memorable for a completely different set of reasons.
Craig Fry, his partner and daughter planned a trip to Newfoundland over the Christmas holidays to get married “back home,” but they got caught in the WestJet travel delays at Toronto Pearson on December 18.
Fry, determined to get home for the special occasion, was undeterred. Not getting any answers from WestJet, he decided to book a flight on Flair to Halifax, then they made the rest of their way home via Marine Atlantic and bus.
He was shocked when he found out that WestJet had, with no notification, cancelled his return trip.
The reason, he was told, was that he didn’t get on the flight that had been rescheduled for December 29. “They were actually expecting us to stay in Toronto from the 18th to the 29th,” says Fry.
Fry is missing a week’s work in Alberta due to the problems. The airline reimbursed him for the cancelled flight, but he’s now out-of-pocket an additional $4,700 dollars with the ferry, bus and rebooked airline tickets.
