Many parents fortunate enough to find a day care spot for their children are now paying less.
The province’s $10-a-day daycare program came into effect on Monday.
While it’s good news for some parents, Gillian Pearson, a child care advocate, says the current wait list for young children to get a spot is years, leaving thousands of families without access to child care.
She says part of the funding for the program is for training and retention of early childcare educators, which is clearly stated in the agreement between the province and the federal government.
As it stands now, Pearson says the downside of the program is that the supply cannot meet the demand.
She says this has put a lot of pressure on a system that does not have the labour force to create all these spaces that are needed. Now a lot of families can’t access childcare at all, no matter what the cost and Pearson says there’s definitely a lot of frustration from parents who are desperate because they can’t find a space at all.
