Canada staged quite a comeback after falling behind 2 to 0 to the United States to move on to the gold medal game at the World Junior Hockey Championship with a 6 to 2 win.
Zach Dean of Mount Pearl played a very strong game for the winners, setting up a goal by Adam Fantilli. The Americans outplayed Canada for much of the game with 43 shots, but had two goals disallowed because of goaltender interference.
Andrew Mercer of Gander says the atmosphere last night was electric and the noise was deafening as fans broke into the theme song “Heave Away” after each Canadian goal. Mercer says Dean has been real catalyst for Canada by going into the tough areas and hitting everything that moves.
The final goes tonight in Halifax at 8:00 NST. Chechia, which upset Canada in the opener on Boxing Day, scored late against Sweden to tie it, then won it in OT.
