The PC MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port is raising concerns about access to French immersion in his district.
Tony Wakeham says a letter was sent out to parents in the region, particularly of those going to Stephenville primary, that states that there is no guarantee of such a program for next year.
Wakeham says that’s despite 40 per cent of Kindergarten students signing up for French immersion next year.
He says the region’s French heritage is culturally and historically significant.
Wakeham recalls a story from someone who used to get strapped for speaking French in school, and as a result, didn’t teach his children the language for fear of going through the same thing.
He says many families have similar stories, and they are choosing French immersion so their kids can regain those language skills. He is calling on government to guarantee the availability of the program in the area.
