The provincial government is urging people on the west and southwest coast of the island to be prepared as a strong storm passes over the area this weekend.
Environment Canada has watches and warnings in place for the entirety of the west coast and parts of central.
Winter storm warnings are in place for the Northern Peninsula, Corner Brook and surrounding area will see a mixed bag of snow, freezing rain, and rain, while areas further south—such as Port aux Basques—will see mostly rain.
The southwest coast, which was ravaged by Hurricane Fiona a few months ago, is of particular concern. According to the warning from Environment Canada, rainfall in that area could exceed 100 mm, and because the ground is frozen it will be hard for the earth to absorb.
Premier Andrew Furey is warning people in the impacted areas that this could be a serious situation. He says people should be prepared, and should listen to and follow advice.
He says people should be at the ready, and watching for updates from the media and all levels of government.
