A retired service member from this province is trying to get a Canadian ally in danger out of Afghanistan.
Retired Major Lisa Compton served as a nurse in Afghanistan for six tours and over the course of her service she came to rely on a local man who worked as a translator.
The man is a recognized Canadian ally who volunteered during mass casualty situations and is currently on the run from Taliban forces.
Now, she’s trying to get the man, who she refers to as “John” to protect his identity, to Canada. She says John and his family are in more danger than ever because he assisted Canadian forces.
She says it has gotten to the point where the official advice was for the family to get to a different country. They were able to make it to Pakistan, but Taliban forces in that country are capturing people and sending them back to Afghanistan to be executed. She says his file has been marked urgent, but there’s been no further movement to get them to Canada.
Compton says on her fourth tour of Afghanistan, John saved her life.
During a rocket strike, John tackled her to the ground and used his body to shield hers. She says he wasn’t wearing any protective gear and was just a local who was willing to put her life ahead of his own.
