A new study from the Fraser Institute shows Newfoundland and Labrador has the second lowest median income in the country. Only PEI is behind this province.
The average median income in Atlantic Canada in 2019 was $32,175—that was 16.8 per cent lower than the average median income in central and western Canada at $37,583.
In Newfoundland and Labrador the median income for 2019 was only marginally lower than the regional average at an even $32,000 dollars.
The Fraser Institute sites a weaker labour market and a lower employment rate as contributing factors. Newfoundland and Labrador however performs better on per-capita GDP than on median income, because of the province’s oil and gas sector.
