Years of cuts have led to a crisis in health care in Labrador says Labrador West MHA, Jordan Brown.
He says Labrador-Grenfell Health was “cut to the bone” and now officials are scrambling to fill needs. He says residents of the coast of Labrador typically go to Happy Valley-Goose Bay which was designed as the service hub for the region.
Continued obstetrical diversions from the hospital in Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Labrador West are causing strain on a region not designed to handle the influx with little to no capacity for accommodations or housing this time of year.
He calls it a symptom of a continued lack of investment in health care in Labrador.
“This has not just happened due to COVID” says Brown, “This is years of government ignoring the health needs and the uniqueness of Labrador.”
