Charges have been dropped against one of two companies following an industrial mishap that left a man with serious injuries.
The incident occurred in July of 2020 at a laydown yard off Fowler’s Road in Chamberlains, which was used as a storage and warehouse site for the Hibernia project.
A worker was doing repairs under a 7-tonne forklift when a part of it fell on him, causing serious injuries including a partially-severed hand.
The man’s employer, Nova Scotia-based Hurricane Industrial Equipment, as well as Blue Water Agencies of C.B.S., which owns the worksite, were initially charged with violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
But in provincial court this morning, the Crown withdrew all charges against Blue Water, but said they’re proceeding with the eight charges against Hurricane Industrial.
They include failing to provide a safe workplace, as well as proper tools and instruction for workers, and failing to safely block an elevated part of equipment — instead unlawfully using a type of jack to do so.
The case involving just Hurricane Industrial is due back in court on March 6th for election and pleas to the charges.
