A couple of humpback whales lingering along the east coast are creating a bit of attention of late.
O’Brien’s Whale and Bird Tours posted a picture of two humpbacks just off Signal Hill this morning.
Humpbacks normally winter in the Caribbean and migrate north the spring following capelin and other food fish, congregating off the coast of Newfoundland.
DFO researcher Dr. Jack Lawson says a small number of adult humpbacks remain in inshore waters throughout the winter, with more remaining in warmer waters offshore in areas like the Flemish Pass or Flemish Cap, but the numbers are relatively small compared to the migrations in the spring and summer.
