An accomplished musician, music teacher and wife of a long-time Newfoundland politician has passed away.
Averill Baker, the wife of former MP George Baker, passed away suddenly at her home in Gander on Thursday. She was 78.
A former television host, newspaper columnist and music teacher, she was raised in Nova Scotia and studied piano at the Toronto Conservatory of Music.
She performed at competitions in Paris, Moscow, Dallas-Fort Worth and Washington, D.C. and taught piano to many budding young talents in Gander.
Her family also lovingly remember her dedication to building and maintaining winter skating rinks in their backyard in Gander, and for blasting VOCM Open Line while working around the house.
