Over 25,000 people in this province have been diagnosed with some form of eating disorder.
Eating Disorder Awareness Week was officially launched today with a flag-raising at Confederation Building this morning.
Dr. Anna Dominic, pediatrician at the Janeway says they’ve seen an increase in young people seeking treatment.
She says ED’s are treated by multiple specialists including psychiatrists and nutritionists.
Dominic says there it’s a complex disease to treat. For children and teens, they use a family based approach that allows parents to learn how to support their children through recovery.
Health Minister Tom Osbourne says the province is committed to supporting those struggling and those who provide treatment.
He says the province continues to provide annual funding to the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador so they can continue to raise awareness.
