The NL Employers’ Council is lobbying for tax changes that could help employers with the cost of doing business.
Executive Director Jaclyn Sullivan says the province needs policies that make Newfoundland and Labrador an attractive place to do business.
She says they have made representation to government on a number of uncompetitive taxes that can make a big difference to business.
There are two in particular that Sullivan says makes this a difficult place to choose to invest or continue to operate.
That include the payroll tax, or HAPSET. The 2 per cent tax on payroll over a certain threshold, which often applies when a business decides to hire more people or increase wages. “It’s completely counterproductive” says Sullivan.
The other they’d like to see addressed is the tax on insurance for corporate properties similar to the tax break afforded to personal property owners last year.
