Newfoundland and Labrador Housing is offering information to anyone in need of emergency shelter, especially during stormy or extremely cold weather.
Concerns have been raised about those who have had trouble finding shelter during inclement weather.
Newfoundland and Labrador Housing is encouraging those in need of emergency shelter to contact their 24-hour Emergency Housing Line at 1-833-724-2444 where staff will direct them to available resources.
In the meantime a number of community organizations are available in the capital city, including The Gathering Place, provide supports to people who find themselves without shelter.
NLHC is also providing the following information:
The City of St. John’s Emergency Management Plan has a contingency for activation of warming/comfort centres should an incident or event take place that affects a large portion of the population. In a major incident/event, they partner and provide supports to non-profit organizations who have the expertise to provide support to the vulnerable population during major events. Ultimately, the City works with them to keep their doors open so they can provide their programs.
NLHC has also been working with the City, End Homelessness St. John’s and a number of community partners to develop any other required responses in cases of extreme weather events. This has included securing additional shelter capacity heading into this weekend.
