Yesterday’s cold temperatures resulted in unprecedented and record-breaking demand for NL Hydro.
Hydro’s system peaked yesterday, supplying some 1730 MW of power to residents, not only of Newfoundland and Labrador, but to neighbouring provinces as well.
Record day! The island peak today was ~1730 MW. The previous record in 2019 was ~1720 MW. A big thank you to our skilled & committed teams who have been working behind the scenes ensuring reliable delivery of electricity on this record cold day. 1/2

Most of the energy was generated through Churchill Falls, Muskrat Falls, Bay d’Espoir and Exploits.
Some 450 MW of power was supplied over the Labrador-Island Link, while 300 MW of total generation was supplied by the Holyrood Generating Station.
NL Hydro says in addition to meeting NL demand, they were also able to help out Nova Scotia and Quebec—providing additional power needed to help meet demand there due to colder temperatures.
Today we also supplied more than ever – the majority from renewable electricity in Churchill Falls, Muskrat Falls, Bay d' Espoir, and Exploits, and 450MW across the LIL. Reliably serving customers here at home and in Nova Scotia and Quebec. 2/2
