Fogo Island has secured a new family physician, but the doctor is moving to the community after closing her practice in the capital city.
That’s leading to questions about the possibility that government incentives for doctors to set up in rural areas might result in poaching from other jurisdictions.
Health Minister Tom Osborne says that’s not what happened in this case. He says no incentives were offered and there was no poaching in this instance.
Osborne says physicians, like anyone, have the right to choose where they wish to work.
