The English School District is immediately suspending bus service involving 20 schools in the St. John’s metro region.
In a news release late Saturday morning, officials say the decision was made out of concern for the safety of students.
They say the move to suspend the contract with Gladney’s Bus Service was not taken lightly, adding they are aware of the significant impact on families.
But the district says following a review of information available, “they could no longer permit the continuation of busing services without confidence it is being provided in a safe manner for students.”

In a follow-up email to VOCM News, a spokesperson would only say the issue surrounds “fleet and operational safety concerns.”
Officials say a contingency plan is in place for affected schools, with alternative service expected to be in place by February 20th.
They say some schools may have busing restored before that time.
In the meantime, families are being asked to find another way for their children to get back and forth to school.
School board officials are apologizing but say they were “left with no alternative but to take these steps in order to maintain student safety.”
