Canada’s premiers will be meeting today to discuss the new health care transfer announced in Ottawa last week.
The proposal would see $196 billion provided to provinces and territories over the next decade.
Fred Bergman, Senior Policy Analyst with APEC, says that amount is much less than what the ministers requested.
He says they requested a $27 billion increase, but received 17 per cent of that amount from Prime Minster Trudeau.
Bergman says the additional funding can help address some challenges, such as health care modernization, but it won’t fix everything.
He says this isn’t the first time there have been agreements for federal healthcare transfers, and with costs expected to rise due to an aging population, that funding will not go as far. The money will help, but it will not be the solution for long waitlists and surgical backlogs, says Bergman.
