Residents of the tiny community of Sheppardville have launched a fundraiser to get a fire truck that’s been donated to them, from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland.
Sheppardville, a local service district made up of about 40 homes, currently receives fire services from Springdale, a good 30 minutes away on the highway.
As a result, homeowners must pay high premiums for their fire insurance.
Nelson Wiseman and a group of concerned residents hope to change that. Starting from scratch, they have formed their own fire department. Wiseman, who now serves as the town’s fire chief, says they even managed to secure a fire truck donated from a community in Nova Scotia, but they need enough funds to purchase the insurance to drive it from Nova Scotia back to Sheppardville.
Wiseman says the people of Sheppardville have donated to the cause, but now they’re looking beyond the community for some support. He’s hoping other fire departments will come on board with a small donation to the cause.
