The City of St. John’s will be extending security hours for two popular parks.
To combat what the city calls “vandalism” of public washrooms and other city infrastructure in Bannerman and Bowring Park, the city will be extending hours for onsite security services to 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. depending on the season. Currently, security services end at 5:00 p.m.
The hiring of the security provider is expected to cost around $61,000 a year, something the city says it is already spending in repairs.
The matter was raised at yesterdays council meeting and was passed unanimously.
Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary says its inhumane to not provide bathroom services in the parks.
She says people with families and seniors need these services to be readily available, and this expenditure will allow them to do so.
