The Gathering Place says they were at capacity last night as some of the province’s most vulnerable sought shelter from the storm, but they did not have to avail of any overflow capacity.
Executive Director Paul Davis says placements are coordinated through NL housing, and they were able to accommodate everyone who was sent their way.
He says sometimes people come knocking on their door who haven’t gone through the emergency housing line, and in those cases they worked with their partners to ensure everyone had a place to stay.
Davis explains the shelter does have extra capacity through its extreme weather event plan, that has been coordinated with NL Housing and other shelters in the area.
He says they can convert some space in The Gathering Place to accommodate extra beds, but it’s a lot of work to do because they have to bring in extra staff and convert the space back for daytime operations.
