A thick layer of ice has made for slippery roads and a number travel cancellations as freezing rain and snow hits parts of the east coast.
Up to 15 mm of freezing rain fell in parts of the Avalon overnight, before switching to ice pellets early Saturday morning.
Both arriving and departing flights at St. John’s International Airport have been cancelled or delayed due to the weather.
Environment Canada meteorologist Tiffany Cheeks says the Avalon is in for another winter blast as conditions are expected to ramp up this afternoon.
She says metro could see up to 15 cm of snow, while parts of Southern Avalon may only see around 5 cm. With wind speeds picking up to around 60 km/h this afternoon, Cheeks says it could make for a “pretty dirty afternoon.”
That system is expected to taper off later tonight with favourable conditions in the forecast for Sunday.
