The City of St. John’s has given the green light for Rogers to go ahead with plans to erect a new cell phone tower, despite the objections of nearby residents.
Council approved the use of land located on Sugarloaf Place in the east end, despite receiving multiple complaints from area residents that the tower could have negative health impacts.
Councillor Debbie Hanlon voted against the motion, citing letters she’s received.
She says there are only about ten residents in the area and she’s heard from seven of them—the most feedback she’s ever received on an issue. Because of that, she’s against the tower’s construction.
Rogers has released information from Health Canada, saying there is no clear evidence that the towers have any impact on safety and well-being.
Ward councillor Ophelia Ravencroft says despite the overwhelming response from residents, she supported the motion due to the evidence provided.
She says most of the concerns involved impacts on DNA and development of tumours. Ravencroft says there’s no scientific evidence to support such claims and Health Canada has deemed the towers safe for residential areas.
