It’s tax season, and the local branch of the CRA is making sure people are as prepared as possible before filing.
Local CRA representative, Melanie Maynard, says the official deadline to file is April 30th, but because that day falls on a weekend they will consider anything sent in or postmarked by May 1st as being on time.
Maynard says not filing on time is a common mistake people make, because they know they’ll owe money. However, she notes taking that route can affect other benefits from government, such as child tax, which may stop due to missing the deadline.
Maynard also reminds that people can receive their refunds more quickly by setting up direct deposit, which can be done by calling the CRA, or through an online CRA account.
