The premiers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec are going to attempt to accomplish what none of their predecessors have been able to do since 1969 regarding hydro development.

The Upper Churchill contract expires in 2041 but both provinces are eager to set the parameters for a new arrangement much sooner than that. Quebec has made a windfall from the power generated in Labrador while this province earns only a few crumbs.

Premier Francois Legault will be in St. John’s tomorrow evening and on Friday to meet with Premier Andrew Furey. It will be discussions as opposed to negotiations, but Premier Furey says Quebec now needs us more than we need them. He also says Newfoundland and Labrador is in the best position it has been in since 1969 to renegotiate the flawed deal.

Furey says things have changed in the past two and a half years.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader David Brazil first wants to see Quebec rectify the wrongs of the past.
