The minister of finance says government is picking up on fraudulent activity more quickly and receiving restoration in a timely manner.
Auditor General Denise Hanrahan noted in a previous report that 30 government employees across several departments used corporate credit cards for personal expenses.
In reacting to the AG’s annual report for 2022, released yesterday, Siobhan Coady, President of Treasury Board, says they have processes in place and sometimes there is no ill intent on the part of the employee. However, some employees have been disciplined.
She acknowledges that there are instances of fraud which do occur and there are impacts on employees as a result.
Hanrahan acknowledges government’s effort to catch fraudulent activity, but such efforts and programs may not apply across the board in all government operations.
She sees very few innocent situations. It shows that something is wrong when somebody can submit fraudulent documents and get paid. She hopes every single incident is dealt with in its own individual circumstance so that we can avoid it in the future.
