While Gander will get to keep its obstetrical unit, the challenge now will be dealing with issues related to diversion that have been plaguing the unit for quite some time.
Health Minister Tom Osborne says a decision was made to keep the unit in Gander, rather than centralizing operations in Grand Falls-Windsor.
Osborne says diversion has been happening at the site for a number of years, and it is because of a shortage of health care professionals. Recruiting obstetricians has to be a top priority, says Osborne.
He says it is a challenge to keep enough staff for the two obstetrical units.
