Dozens of residents forced from their Corner Brook apartment building earlier this week have been given the all-clear to return home.
The 56-unit Bayview Apartments was evacuated late Monday night after smoke was discovered due to a fire in the electrical room.
Canadian Red Cross volunteers worked out emergency housing and meals for 66 tenants from 40 apartments. Residents of the other 16 units made their own arrangements, such as staying with relatives or friends.
The fire at the four-storey complex on Beothuck Crescent resulted in power being disconnected to the entire building, prompting an evacuation order from the province’s fire commissioner.
Repairs, which required parts to be flown to Corner Brook, as well as subsequent inspections, led to the decision to allow tenants to return today.
Meanwhile, 24 residents of an apartment complex in C.B.S. remain displaced following a power outage on Thursday.
According to the Red Cross, which is looking after most of the tenants for at least this weekend, the order to evacuate also came from the fire commissioner who concluded it was unsafe for them to stay in the building without heat, light, alarm systems or use of the elevator.
The three-storey building at Woodgrove Acres in Kelligrews lost power due to failure of a transformer in the area.
Red Cross volunteers have arranged emergency housing and meals throughout the weekend for 19 tenants from eight of the 12 apartments. The remaining five tenants are staying with relatives or friends.
It’s expected to be at least Monday before electricity can be restored and tenants can return to the building.
