Two dozen residents of an apartment complex in C.B.S. have been temporarily forced from their units following a power outage on Thursday.
According to the Canadian Red Cross, which is looking after most of the tenants for at least the weekend, the order to evacuate came from the fire commissioner who concluded it was unsafe for them to stay in the building without heat, light, alarm systems or use of the elevator.
The three-storey building at Woodgrove Acres in Kelligrews lost power due to failure of a transformer in the area.
Red Cross volunteers have arranged emergency housing and meals throughout the weekend for 19 tenants from eight of the 12 apartments. The remaining five tenants are staying with relatives or friends.
It’s expected to be at least Monday before electricity can be restored and other safety requirements met for the evacuation order to be lifted so tenants can return to the building.
