Members of the FFAW met with the federal Liberal caucus last week seeking commitments on a number of issues affecting the province’s fishery.
The union called for clear committments on northern, gulf and cout coast cod, mackerel, redfish, seals and other issues facing the inshore fishery.
Union President Greg Pretty says while things like high-speed internet is a great endeavour, if Ottawa doesn’t make “drastic changes” there won’t be any residents left to use that internet.
Among the specific commitments the union was looking for were increases to cod quotas, a stewardship or index Gulf cod fishery, the reopening of the mackerel fishery, increased accountability in fisheries science, and a greater push towards a better understanding of the effects of seal predation and how to address it.
