The provincial government has put forth another sign of solidarity with Ukraine, signing a proclamation officially marking November 26 in recognition of the Holodomor.
The Holodomur—or death by starvation—occurred during a 1932-33 when the former Soviet government imposed punishing grain quotas on the people of Ukraine—resulting in widespread famine and the deaths of millions.
The proclamation was signed Friday on the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Byrne calls the period a “genocide” and says that it was hidden for years, making it all the more important that it is remembered today.
