The daughter of a man in a long-term care facility in Carbonear is asking some serious questions after her father was brutally attacked on the dementia ward.
Stacey LeShane says she first received a call yesterday morning that her father was in emergency at Carbonear Hospital, after being beaten by another patient.
LeShane describes the injuries her father suffered.
She says one side of his face is “unrecognizable.” She says he lost two teeth, one of his eyes is purple and swollen, he had to have stitches to a wound above his eye, his lips are swollen, and he hasn’t been able to eat or drink through a straw because his mouth is in so much pain.
LeShane says she and her family do not blame the frontline staff in the facility.
However, since sharing what happened, they have heard stories from other families about similar incidents occurring.
LeShane is frustrated with the response of the social worker at the home.
She says the patient in question continues to walk around freely on the unit. LeShane says her mother was told there’s nothing that can be done, and they cannot guarantee the safety of her father or other residents.
