Neither the defence nor the Crown is seeking jail time for an RNC officer found guilty of assaulting her former girlfriend.
34-year-old Const. Noelle Laite was convicted in January of assault and assault causing bodily harm in the domestic dispute.
The incidents occurred at the couple’s Pasadena home between late 2020 and early 2021, when charges were laid.
During today’s sentencing hearing, court was told Laite is a first-time offender and has solid support from friends and her RNC colleagues.
She has never been disciplined on the job, with positive reports coming from her supervisors.
But Judge Wayne Gorman will have to weigh all of that against the impact on the 27-year-old victim in the case.
Laite was placed on office duty when she was charged, and suspended without pay after she was convicted.
Her lawyer said the outcome could spell the end of her policing career, noting results of an internal investigation are still to come.
Laite is scheduled to be sentenced on March 6.
The Crown is seeking house arrest for 60-90 days plus 12 months’ probation while the defence says a suspended sentence of 18-24 months is appropriate.
