The president of Beer Canada says it’s time that Ottawa considered raising beer taxes annually based on inflation.
The price of beer in the country is due to increase by 6.3 per cent as of April 1st — no joke.
But Beer Canada boss CJ Hélie says there’s no reason why the federal government has to raise that tax at this time, especially considering already high inflation and interest rates.
CJ Hélie is asking for a pause on beer tax increases in Canada, noting taxes already account for about half the price.
He says they’re not asking for a cut or a break for brewers, but are seeking a pause or freeze until interest rates come down to the Bank of Canada’s target of 2 per cent.
