Cybersecurity experts are warning the public about the latest iteration of Canada Revenue Agency-style scams which are more concerning than previous years.
The latest scams involve more sophisticated-looking email links designed to steal personal information.
Kristin Matthews, marketing and communications manager with the Better Business Bureau-Atlantic says it appears scammers are getting help from people in Canada.
She says they are now seeing scam emails with little or no grammatical or spelling errors, adding they’re using real government logos along with the Interac logo which are making them appear more legitimate than in the past.
Matthews says if you do get an email that you think is suspicious, do not click any links as that could lead to downloading malware, or giving personal information to a scammer; when in doubt, delete the email and contact the CRA directly, she advises.
Matthews says CRA will sometimes send an email but they will direct you to the CRA My Account secure log in.
She says they’ll never email you saying you have a transfer and that you need to click on a link to accept it, noting if you are receiving a refund, the CRA will auto-deposit the money in your account or a cheque will come in the mail.
