Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador is looking for a $6-million increase in municipal operating grants to help meet the increased cost of operations.
MNL president Amy Coady says the funding the province provides to municipalities to keep services going hasn’t budged from $22 million back in 2015.
She says with the cost of inflation, the buying power of that $22 million would equate to about $28 million.
Coady is seeking the $6-million increase in this spring’s provincial budget, noting the province’s seven largest municipalities don’t even avail of municipal operating grants.
The money is used to keep municipalities sustainable and meet infrastructure needs and services.
“A $6-million ask. We don’t feel that’s a lot of money,” says Coady.
