Coastal communities and local tourism operators are hopeful for a bumper crop of icebergs off the coast this spring and early summer.

The local Newfoundland Iceberg Reports Facebook group is already reporting some bergs among the pack ice well offshore.

One is easily visible from Bonavista.

The group has 48 thousand members and continues to grow.

Administrator Diane Davis says there is something about icebergs that capture the amazement and wonder, not only of visitors, but of local residents as well.

She says Newfoundlanders are getting in on the action by posting pictures of bergs when they see them which helps to generate greater interest and excitement.
