Some questions are being raised about the lengths to which some municipalities are willing to go to try to enhance health care recruitment efforts.
The Town of Bonavista announced some time ago that it was contemplating additional incentives to help recruit doctors to the local clinic.
Mayor John Norman indicated at the time that the town was considering the offer of building lots and even the possibility of a cash signing bonus.
Sociologist Dr. Deatra Walsh cautions against that kind of approach. She told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that while she appreciates that municipalities do have a role to play in helping to recruit health care and other professionals, she’s not sure cash incentives should become the norm.
“Is that what they should be doing with the little funding they have?” asks Walsh. “Should they have to take a portion of their operational funding to do this work too?”
