A retired RCMP officer fighting criminal charges laid while he was still with the force is alleging serious flaws with the investigation.
Forty-nine-year-old Steven Blackmore was a corporal with the Mounties when the incident is alleged to have occurred in June of 2019.
Blackmore, who was on leave from work at the time, is accused of assault and forcible confinement against a man in Clarenville.
SIRT NL, which investigates serious incidents involving the police, laid the charges but passed the case to the RNC due to a conflict between SIRT and Blackmore.
Provincial court Judge Paul Noble also said he can’t hear the case because he’s an acquaintance of the accused.
Blackmore, who continues to represent himself, claims the investigation was riddled with tunnel vision that focused solely on him.
He’s also questioning the delays with getting disclosure of the evidence against him from the RNC.
Indeed, the Crown admitted in Clarenville court this morning they have no idea when the RNC will forward the bulk of the information.
An update on the status of that evidence is expected when the case returns to court on March 30.
