One of the oldest men’s-only membership clubs in the province and country is now allowing women to join.
After 147 years, the Star of the Sea in Placentia has become fully inclusive.
President Paul Power says the issue has been broached a few times in the past but just didn’t come to fruition for a myriad of reasons.
He says the women’s auxiliary has played a significant role in helping to keep the Star open, and without them, the club probably would have closed a few years ago.
He says as president of the Star of the Sea he’d like to welcome all the new members and is rejoicing in the fact that the Star is now fully inclusive.
The Holyrood branch of the Star of the Sea opened the doors to women in the ’90s.
