Clocks are set to spring an hour forward tonight, one local psychiatrist says the time change can have a big impact on certain people.
Dr. Chris Earle, a psychiatrist who specializes in sleep disorders says the time change can have physical and mental health impacts on parents, night shift workers, and night owls.
In the first week following the time change, he says they see a higher rate of traffic and workplace accidents, heart attack and stroke, as well as increased reports in depressive symptoms.
Earle says there are a number of things people can do to adjust after losing that extra hour.
He says it’s a good idea to start your day by getting out and getting some sunshine early in the morning. For those heading out this weekend, Dr. Earle advises against “burning the candle at both ends”. He says people should try to get to bed earlier to avoid feeling groggy the following morning.
