The winningest skip in Tim Horton’s Brier history is still wrapping his head around what he and his team have accomplished.
Brad Gushue defeated Manitoba’s Matt Dunstone 7-5 in the Brier final in Ontario on Sunday. It’s Gushue’s fifth Brier crown in the past seven years, making him the winningest skip of all time.
Gushue says he hasn’t gotten his head around what they’ve been able to achieve, even over the last 6 or 7 years. He says it’s all pretty incredible and fun to have these opportunities. He’s trying to enjoy it and soak it all up as much as he can.
There’s not much time for rest for Team Gushue though.
Gushue and teammates Mark Nichols, E.J. Harnden and Geoff Walker will represent Canada at the World Curling Championships next month in Ottawa.
As for how he prepares for worlds both mentally and physically, Gushue admits it is a big challenge and that they need rest, but to also ramp up and be ready to go for a world championship come April 1.
He says they’ll take a week off and then start to build back up and get back in game shape.
Gushue says the biggest thing over the next week is to make sure they get their energy back, get any physical ailments taken care of and be ready to go in Ottawa.
It’s a grueling period, however, Gushue and company are fortunate that it’s their fifth time doing it so they have plenty of experience.
