It’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend, and while many associate this time of year with over-indulgence in alcohol, new research suggests many Canadians are looking to cut back.
The Canadian Centre for Substance Use and Addiction recently announced a change in alcohol guidelines in Canada, now recommending a maximum of two standard drinks a week.
Narrative Research recently polled people from across the country and found that about 60 per cent of Canadians have heard of the new guidelines, with about 40 per cent of people surveyed saying they will definitely or probably reduce consumption.
In fact, COO Margaret Chapman notes that the average for Atlantic Canada come in at slightly above the national average.
She says how much people intend to cut back also depends on their age.
They found that people in the age 25-34 group are more likely to say they’ll cat back than people in the 19-24 age range, or the 35 plus group.
