The ice that pushed into Conception Bay North in recent days has moved out again, but it’s left a sad toll in its wake.
The carcasses of about two dozen white-beaked dolphins were left on the beach at Carbonear yesterday after the pack ice moved out, and another few animals died in neighbouring Bristol’s Hope.
Local residents managed to rescue one animal from Bristol’s Hope and a few more from Carbonear, but the other dolphins could not be saved.
Carbonear mayor Frank Butt says he was down on the beach yesterday to see the terrible spectacle first-hand. The town was hoping that high tide might take the carcasses back out, and they would be returned to nature.
He says the town will work with provincial officials to remove the carcasses if they remain in the area.
