Work has begun to convert the former College of the North Atlantic building in Stephenville Crossing into a courthouse and Government Service Centre.
Government says a $283,000 contract has been awarded to Tech Construction to demolish various interior architectural, mechanical, and electrical components at the building.
Government anticipates work under that contract to be completed this spring, with further renovations and construction beginning later this year.
They say the improvements will allow government services to be provided in a modernized and accessible way.
As well, they say it will lead to an increase in safety and security for court proceedings, and a more functional workplace for workers.
