The former Grace Hospital Nursing Residence in the capital city will be torn down this year.
The building has been boarded up since the early 2000s and is widely considered to be one of the city’s most prominent eyesores.
Its demolition has been talked about for years, and in the 2023 budget, government committed to finally tearing it down.
The money to do so will come from $7.8-million set aside for the new Cardiovascular and Stroke Institute and the St. Clare’s replacement.
Government has publicly stated that the site is being considered for the new St. Clare’s, but Transportation Minister Elvis Loveless says a decision on that has not yet been made.
He says the building needs to come down before those in real estate would even consider the site. Loveless believes they are getting the best of both worlds with the situation—a delipidated building will be gone, those that live near the building will benefit, and the property is “high value” so taxpayers will benefit as well.
Loveless says they don’t have any timelines for demolition yet, other than to say it will be done by the end of the year.
